Electrolux: State of the Arm

8 years ago AEG engineers realized that if you want to improve the dishwasher, one had to perfect the arm. Arms are the world’s most used tools and their stories inspire the engineer, architect and sports fan alike. Welcome to State of the Arm. It’s a celebration to arms and arm engineering.

For Cod’s Sake

On this project I have been the Photographer filming scenes in Scandinavia, Germany, Belgium and Canada. When not filming I have been editing.

Short Synopsis:

Fishermen, scientists and politicians have – all in good faith – done their best to wipe out the Baltic Sea cod. And just as a historic recovery is about to take place, Baltic Sea fishermen dump tonnes of dead cod back into the sea every week. For Cod´s Sake reveals how and why.

Fortunately, recent environmental conditions have – by chance – led to more cod in the Baltic. And the European Union proclaims it wants to save the species. But ironically, EU regulations force fishermen to discard thousands of dead cod – every day. And scientists advising the EU disagree heavily on the extent of the recovery.

So is the cod really back – or is a wipe-out still imminent?

Over two dramatic and decisive years Folke Rydén and the production team got up and close with fishermen, scientists, politicians and the cod itself.

Without the cod, the sea will be out of balance, the water filthy and fishermen will survive only as tourist attractions.

From Bill to Barack

From Bill to Barack is a documentary about the current state of the US which Folke Rydén directed together with Bengt Norborg. I was working on the project as the editor.

Short Synopsis:
In 1992 U.S. correspondent Folke Rydén and cameraman Dan Jåma covered the presidential race, from the early primaries until the day of the vote.

Now, in 2008, the same people are being visited again. Through their life stories from the last 16 years, the same ordinary Americans as in 1992 give a stunning account of how the most powerful nation has changed and how this profoundly affects the presidential election.

Full Cover Girl

This documentary film about the situation for women and democracy in Iraq was film number six I have been working on whilst employed at Folke Rydén Production AB in Stockholm. This time as the editor.

Short Synopsis:
Aspiring Iraqi women politicians are profiled during several years. They literally risk their lives participating in the future of their country. And they differ dramatically in their views on democracy, nation building and women’s rights.

By focusing on these women the film sheds light on the larger issue: What does it mean to build and practice democracy? Should a democracy curbing some rights for women be encouraged?

Filming was taking place in Baghdad, Amman, Washington DC and Sweden.

Cycle of Change – Beijing, my old home

This is the first documentary project I produced, directed and edited myself. It was shown at the New Beijing international Filmfestival in 2007 where it was awarded the Golden Duck Award for the best short Documentary. It also won the award for best documentary about cityscapes/architecture at the Lund Architecture and Film festival 2010.

Short Synopsis:
I was twelve years old when my family moved from Hamburg to Beijing. We stayed for four years and Beijing quickly felt like a hometown to me. As I return 15 years later, I find a totally changed city.

The Film shows my search for the old Beijing of my childhood. Instead I find the new rhythm of this fast-changing international metropolis. „The people have become colder” says one interviewee still living in the Hutongs – the quarters that I remember for being warm, social and vibrant with life. Most of the Hutongs have given way to the more modern buildings. Nevertheless, they still exist, the old places and known faces, but finding them has become increasingly difficult.

In the preparations for the 2008 Olympics, the speed of change has increased to a new level. I wondered how the citizens of Beijing feel about the Olympic Games coming to their city. ‘The Olympic Games are good’, said one, ‘certainly for the development of the city. But what it means for us personally, we still don´t know.’

Old video-recordings – memories from back then – mix with images of a modern Beijing. The Film is a personal portrait of a city, that I somehow still feel at home in.

Having been offered a permanent job at Folke Rydén Production after my workexperience I was working on this very big project. Expedition Linnaeus is a documentary film to commemorate the tercentenary of the birth of the world-renowned natural scientist, the Swedish botanist Carolus Linnaeus (Carl von Linné).

The film is a journey of discovery to seven continents, into space, down into the depths of the oceans and into the future. At the centre are crucial questions: How should we behave and act today in order to survive tomorrow and how can science and research contribute to a better world?

Inspired by Linnaeus curiosity and the thrill of discovery, the expedition meets some of the world’s leading researchers and experts, who try to give answers to these questions.

The Tsunami Generation

Film number two whilst working at Folke Rydén Production AB. Here two I was the editing assistant but was also helping out on the shooting days for scenes that were filmed in Stockholm.

Short Synopsis:
Through compelling stories of remnants of families, this film is an emotional account on how the year following the tsunami came to be almost as turbulent as the tsunami itself.

For decades Aceh was an isolated, religious and heavily contested province of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. In the mountains the guerrilla organization, GAM, was fighting the government for independence and Aceh was closed to the rest of the world.

Having suffered through one of the worst natural disasters in living memory, remnants of families are waiting for a place to stay and a life to live. They are the Tsunami Generation. A generation of people with a glimpse of hope in their eyes, despite the overwhelming struggle that remains to get life back to normal.

Away from the wave

In summer 2005 I started a workexperience at Folke Rydén Production AB. This is the first film I worked on and became the editing assistant on this production.

Short Synopsis:
On December 26th 2004, Ove Ohlson is filming his children playing on the beaches of Khao Lak. Suddenly the water withdraws significantly. Then a massive wave comes roaming towards the beach. Seconds later the whole area is covered in water.

And the video camera is still recording.

This spectacular beginning sets the stage for heartbreaking stories from Thai and Swedish survivors. On their way from the wave, they all unite in the quest for a new life.

Away From the Wave is a strong emotional account of the Boxing day tragedy. But instead of focusing only on the unbearable loss and sadness, this film depicts how a deep and sincere love and understanding have raised between people of different backgrounds and cultures.
